I am working through the 86 books on the back of my bedroom door. Mostly mysteries. This was a police procedural, mostly. One of Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series. Kay is suffering emotionally, has a female police chief trying to get Kay fired, and she is hunting for a very strange murderer. Ends a bit abruptly, but I think many of these books do. I wouldn't make this my first Kay Scarpetta story if I were you...
