This is a book that was written later about an earlier part of Hornblower's life and career. He has been promoted to commander (not quite a captain) and has a small sloop at his command. It is a time of peace turning into a time of war. Hornblower ends up fighting a well written naval battle with a ship much larger than his. Good stuff - fills in some of the gaps in Hornblower's early history.
